We reached out to an AI professor at Fairfield University to gain insight into how we could improve our robot for competition success. He helped us understand effective methods for detecting distance using AprilTags. This outreach allowed us to expand our community connections, introduce the professor to FIRST, and gain valuable knowledge that directly supported our performance during competitions.

During Hour of Code, we reached out to middle school students to introduce them to FIRST. We explained how students of all ages can get involved in FIRST and highlighted opportunities for young adults to develop technical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. By engaging with these students, we aimed to inspire the next generation of innovators and encourage them to pursue interests in STEM both in and beyond the classroom.

As students entered the building, we gave a short presentation introducing our robot and explaining its purpose. We actively engaged them by allowing them to place game artifacts into the robot’s intake, giving them a hands-on experience. Through this interaction, we were able to inspire multiple students to learn more about FIRST, teach them about what our team does, and explain how robotics competitions work.

We organized a fundraiser to raise awareness about FIRST within our community while also collecting funds to support our team. During the event, we explained what FIRST is and how robotics competitions encourage innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving. Through this fundraiser, we connected with over 30 community members and raised money toward purchasing a 3D printer, which will allow us to design and manufacture custom parts to improve our robot’s performance in competitions.
